Welcome Back…During this time of the year, when you may be wrapping up your financial information for the last year and getting ready to file your tax returns, you may be finding very little joy or happiness in what you are doing. I know I have a lot of accountants, CPAs, bookkeepers, tax preparers, and other financial professionals who listen to this podcast, and I totally understand how this time of the year may be hard on you. Or, maybe you live in a state like I do, where the winter and the snow are overall just getting you down, and you can’t wait for spring and all its amazingness to come. Owning a business can be mentally and physically draining. There may be times when you are having a hard time finding joy or happiness in your business, but today I’m going to cover multiple ways that you can easily take a few steps to bring that joy and happiness into your business.
The first thing I want you to think about is why you wanted to start your business in the first place. The simple fact that you own your own business may bring you the joy and happiness you are looking for. Take a minute and think about why you wanted to start your business in the first place. Then, ask yourself if you are feeling that with your business right now. Did you want to start your own business so that you didn’t have a boss controlling when you worked or what you needed to do? Now that you have your own business, you can create your own work hours. The work you do is your own, and you can be proud of it. You put a lot of time into choosing your business, and I’m sure you find the work you are doing worthwhile. All the reasons you wanted to start your business in the first place should bring you joy. You may have just stopped thinking about them, but you are thinking about them now, aren’t you?
I also want you to think about what success means to you. How do you want to live your life? What will bring you happiness? What are the most rewarding things you are doing in your business? Think about what you are grateful for every day in your business and your personal life. What have you accomplished so far in your business? Be appreciative. Thank the people who you work with that are helping you achieve your accomplishments, and make sure you are including your family and friends. Take a minute and write out a thank you card. This will help reinforce what you are thankful for as well as make an impact on the person you are sending it to. And for those goals you haven’t achieved yet, be patient with yourself and keep moving forward and getting closer to reaching them.
Next, I want to make sure you are putting yourself first. You need to take care of yourself so that you can successfully run your business. Your care should come before your business. Make sure you are able to get enough sleep, you are eating healthy, and you are able to get in your exercise. Incorporate nature whenever you can. Take a walk outside if it is possible. Turn off distractions like your phone at certain times of the day so that you can have full focus on the task you are working on. Plan activities in the future that you are excited about and mark them in your calendar. Don’t change them; make sure that you stick to your calendar and enjoy the activities you are planning. These activities could be during your typical work day, or you can easily find happiness outside of your normal work day. When you are able to take a break, you’ll find that you will start enjoying your business more. Each break you take can give you a fresh outlook when you return back to work.
For your workday, try to set only one to three goals each day to help you prevent overwhelm. If you are able to get these tasks or goals done, you can work on other tasks you know need to get done, but don’t tell yourself you have fifty things due in one day. Don’t tell yourself you have to get it all done in one day if that’s not even feasible. Write down what your goals are for the day and make it a habit to cross them off your to-do list. For many business owners, the actual act of crossing something off your list brings happiness and joy. Make sure you don’t overbook yourself. Learn to say no. If you find something that doesn’t align with your business goals and you don’t have the extra time for it, it is okay to say no. Eliminate clients or customers that are causing you negativity in your business. Assess if they are worth the hassle they are putting you through. Remember the 80/20 rule. That small percentage of negative clients may be having a significant impact on your business. Don’t compare yourself or your business to others. Stay in your lane and be proud of what you are accomplishing in your personal and business life. Try to be more proactive on deadlines. Don’t wait until the last minute to get things done. It only causes stress and anxiety, and most people don’t do their best work under these conditions. Be intentional about being happy. Make sure that your surroundings are enjoyable. Buy yourself fresh flowers for your desk every week, or design your office so that it feels more like an oasis rather than a dungeon by using photos, plants, and a splash of color.
There is joy in almost everything, and finding that joy can be challenging, but if you ask yourself in every situation what is the joy here, you’ll more than likely find something joyful, even if it’s small. Try to be the person who can find joy in every situation. Make sure you are in business for the right reasons. When you follow your passion and let the revenues follow, you will find yourself much happier than if you are in business only to make money. Remember, I always say, dream big, follow your heart, and love what you do. Always look for ways to bring joy into your business. When you do this, you’ll enjoy your business more and be open to ways you can improve your business. Be willing to grow and learn with your business, and always ensure that you maintain a work-life balance that works for you and your life. Everyone will have a different work-life balance, so it is important to know exactly what works best for your business and personal life.
Surround yourself with happy people, be intentional about being happy, and be mindful of your attitude, feelings, and actions that you take every day. Help others and give back to your community. When you become a problem solver or help others, this alone will help you feel good. Most people feel good simply by taking the time to help others with something they are struggling with.
Remember, you are in charge of your own happiness. Are you able to find happiness or joy in your business? If not, be honest with yourself. You may want to look for a mentor or coach to help you achieve happiness in your business if you are still having a hard time bringing joy into your business. When I work with my clients, there have been many times when the business owner is unable to find happiness in their business. They are putting in their time, and many are successful, but they are just no longer happy in their business. I want you to know that you can bring joy and happiness back into your business if you are feeling this way. You can be much happier in your business, and when you do this, you change your focus, and your success is inevitable.
During the month of March, I want to give back to the accountants, CPAs, bookkeepers, and especially tax preparers. I know personally how hard it can be during a busy season to keep joy and happiness in your business when you are working lots of hours, and you know there are many deadlines to meet. I also know how much it can impact your personal life when you feel that joy and happiness slipping away. I don’t ask for favors much during my podcast, but I do have a favor to ask you today. I would love for you to let your accountant, CPA, bookkeeper, or tax preparer know that I am doing a drawing to give away five free coaching packages where I will help you bring joy and happiness back into your business, even during your busiest time of the year. If you are an accountant, CPA, bookkeeper, tax preparer, or financial professional yourself, you can go to www.FinancialAdventure.com/accountant to get all the details and to register during the month of March 2023.
